Maserati-Cancels-MC20-Folgore-EV-After-5-Years

Maserati Canceled his all EV MC 20 car

Maserati’s electric dreams hit a wall in March 2025 with the cancellation of its MC20 Folgore, a tri-motor electric supercar five years in the making. Promising 700+ horsepower and a 0-60 mph time under 2 seconds, the Folgore was meant to spearhead Maserati’s “Folgore” (Italian for lightning) EV lineup 15. But it wasn’t alone:

• Quattroporte Folgore (electric sedan) was delayed to 2028.

• Levante EV (electric SUV) now faces an uncertain future 47.

Only three Folgore models survived: the electric Grecale SUV, GranTurismo, and GranCabrio—all existing gas cars retrofitted with batteries 5.

What Was Canceled?

Maserati had ambitious plans to introduce an electric version of its flagship MC20 nicknamed the MC20 Folgore (“Folgore” means lightning in Italian). This project was set to be one of several EV offerings from Maserati, aimed at transitioning the brand into the electrified future. However, despite years of anticipation, the MC20 electric supercar was pulled from the lineup.

Why Did Maserati Cancel It?

1. Lack of Demand

Maserati’s market research revealed a harsh truth: MC20 customers want roaring engines, not silent speed. The brand admitted, “They are not ready to switch to BEVs for the foreseeable future”:

• Customers Prefer ICE: Many fans of the MC20 still crave the signature roar of the Maserati Nettuno V6 engine.

• EV Hesitation: In the super sports car segment, buyers are not yet ready to embrace battery-electric vehicles over the familiar internal combustion experience.

2. Falling Sales Numbers

1. Sales Plummeted 57% in 2024

  2023 Sales: 26,600 cars globally.

2024 Sales: 11,300 cars—fewer than Ferrari (13,752) and barely ahead of Lamborghini (10,700).

2. Financial Struggles: This steep decline contributed to massive financial losses (up to €260 million in some reports), putting additional pressure on the brand.

3. Investment Pullback

The cancellation wasn’t an isolated decision:

• Stellantis’ Role: Maserati’s parent company, Stellantis, recently scrapped a major investment (ranging from £1.2 billion to $1.5 billion) in the brand’s electric future.

• Reassessing Priorities: With such significant funds off the table, Maserati had to rethink its strategy—opting to focus on enhancing its already popular gas-powered models.

4. The Alfa Romeo Factor: Why Maserati’s EV Dreams Crashed

Turns out, Maserati’s electric MC20 Folgore had a silent partner in failure: Alfa Romeo’s 33 Stradale EV. Here’s the scoop:

Both cars were built on the same platform, sharing parts and tech. But Alfa Romeo only planned to make 33 units of its electric supercar. Think about it—designing a high-tech EV system for just 33 cars is like baking a wedding cake for a goldfish. Wildly expensive, totally impractical.

When Alfa hesitated (smartly realizing “Hey, this makes no financial sense”), Maserati got stuck holding the bill. Suddenly, building the MC20 Folgore became a money pit. Even luxury car giants can’t ignore basic math.

What Did Maserati Say?

In their official statement, Maserati explained:

“Market studies for the super sports car segment and especially for MC20 customers have demonstrated that they are very keen on driving powerful ICE engines and are not ready to switch to BEVs for the foreseeable future.”

This candid admission reflects the harsh reality of customer preferences and highlights why an all-electric MC20 just wasn’t viable at this time.

What’s Next for Maserati?

Rather than pushing forward with an electric version that didn’t resonate with buyers, Maserati is shifting its focus:

• Upgraded Gas-Powered MC20: Expect enhancements to the current MC20, building on technologies from the GT2 Stradale.

• Selective EV Lineup: While the MC20 Folgore is canceled, Maserati will continue offering other EV versions like those based on the Grecale, GranTurismo, and GranCabrio badges albeit in smaller numbers.

Moral of the story?

EVs only work if you sell more than a handful. Supercar drama can’t beat spreadsheet reality.
